Content Call for Special Issue on Coral Research

ECO Magazine to publish a special issue on coral reef research in partnership with the hosts of the 14th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS 2020)

Available in June 2020, the Coral Reef special issue will showcase international research, expert opinions and advancements in restoration and monitoring technologies. The digital-only edition will be an important multimedia resource that aims to highlight the current status of research in the field, increase awareness of vital issues, help identify gaps in knowledge and enable collaboration between academia, government and industry.

ECO Magazine and ICRS 2020 are now inviting researchers, engineers, and industry members involved in coral reef projects (research, monitoring, management or restoration) to submit articles about their current and future activities. Contributors can submit stories under one of the following categories:

Theme 1 - Basic information biology
-Example topics: how corals change our world (corals as builders); what is a coral/coral reef; centers of biodiversity; and cold-water reefs.

Theme 2 - Economy
-Example topics: the value of coral ecosystems; corals as medical agents; coastal protection; tourism; and fisheries.

Theme 3 - Threats
-Example topics: ocean acidification; climate change; people and reefs (local threats, tourism, overfishing, coastal development); and reef crises of the past (paleontology)

Theme 4 - Protective measures
-Example topics include adaptive bleach/supercorals; protected areas; reef reforestation; and measures against climate change

Those wishing to contribute are encouraged to email the magazine’s senior editor, Kira Coley (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) before submitting content. The deadline for submissions is May 18th, 2020.

“With a large proportion of the ocean community now working from home, it’s a great time to be creative and dedicate some time to increasing awareness about these projects,” said Coley. “It is a challenging time for active research, but we have an opportunity to take stock of how far we’ve come in advancing coral studies and mitigation and restoration practices in recent years.”

The Coral Reef Special Issue will be produced in partnership with the University of Bremen, the hosts of the 14th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS 2020). ICRS 2020 is the primary international conference on coral reef science, conservation and management, bringing together leading scientists, early career researchers, conservationists, ocean experts, policy makers, managers and the public. ICRS 2020 will be the key event to develop science-based solutions addressing the present and future challenges of coral reefs, which are globally exposed to unprecedented anthropogenic pressures.

“In light of the coronavirus crisis, the ICRS 2020 may be postponed to a later date. However, delegates can still submit feature stories based on their talks to the magazine, which will still continue with production,” adds Coley. “We hope that together, with the help of the global ocean community, we can create a resource that celebrates innovation and success in the field of coral reefs, as well as providing some much-needed respite from the usual news headlines that are dominating our screens today.”
