Expeditions to Validate Artificial Reef Programs Highlight Canadian Technology

Beginning in October 2016, the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia (ARSBC) will spearhead a series of unique marine expeditions to validate the successful results of artificial reefing programs in increasing biodiversity and marine biomass.

Using Aquatica’s manned submersible the Stingray 500, each mission dive will capture imagery and collect data, while providing experts and key stakeholders a collaborative environment to monitor and observe individual artificial reef sites in real-time. From scientists to researchers, to sponsors, media, celebrities, and policy makers, now key influencers have an extraordinary opportunity to support and be part of an expedition that can directly impact environmental reefing efforts.

Expedition #1, in October 2016 is comprised of 8 full days with a series of mission dives in waters around Vancouver and Vancouver Island to:

  • Compare fish and fauna species populations on the oldest and most recent artificial reef installation
  • Research the health of the biodiversity
  • Observe the condition of the wreck as marine habitat
  • Document the different biological personality of each wreck site

The mission will be built around 3 individual artificial reef targets (subject to project programming): The Annapolis; a Boeing 737, and the M/V GB Church.

A second expedition, scheduled for 2017, will capture live images of the sinking of an artificial reef target and collect, data, images and documentation of the entire reefing portfolio, to include: the vessels Mackenzie; Cape Breton; Columbia; Saskatchewan; and Chaudiere.

Aquatica Submarines’ manned submersible the Stingray 500, will allow the expedition team to observe and monitor designated artificial reef sites first-hand, while capturing important data and imagery to establish the health of each reef site. A key component to the entire expedition will be creating a documentary fi lm library and photo gallery to validate each individual reef’s success. Important findings will be used to promote, quantify, and advance artificial reefing programs in Canada and around the world. As part of the expedition team, ARSBC will invite experts from a wide range of industries to contribute, take part in, and become key drivers in shaping the future of artificial reefing projects and the expansion of ecologically sound man-made marine habitats.
