Review: Shorebirds in Action by Richard Chandler

Those looking for a beautiful and informative book on winged waders will do well to pick up Shorebirds in Action, An introduction to waders and their behaviour. The book offers a balanced blend of spectacular photographs and engaging text representing a lifetime of work.

shorebirds in action Author Richard Chandler has a passion for these birds and it shows. He has been birding seriously since the early 1970s and is also the author of "North Atlantic Shorebirds (Macmillan, 1989) and "Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere" (A&C Black, 2009; revised 2013).

His latest volume, Shorebirds in Action includes photographs of 180 species and, as the title implies, the birds are not captured in stiff portraits, but in ways that illustrate territorial behavior, plumage, moult, feeding, roosting, breeding behavior, migration and flocking. The photos will have any casual reader browsing page after page. The text is also engaging, and it includes references for further reading at the end of each chapter. The full-color images of Shorebirds in Action reveal an expert eye for nature photography and a birder who knows his subjects well. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the fascinating lives of wading shorebirds.
