ICYMARE 2020 - An Online Early-Career Marine Researchers Networking Event

ICYMARE stands for International Conference for Young MArine REsearchers. This annual conference is for early-career researchers from all marine sciences. Organized bottom-up it is also completely run by volunteers while being hosted by different institutions each year.

ICYMARE Logo wideICYMARE provides a professional set-up but in the same way an easy-to-talk-to atmosphere for Bachelor, Master, and PhD candidates in marine sciences to gather first conference experiences on eye level and to establish an own personal worldwide network.

After a successful first ICYMARE edition in Bremen, Germany, with about 350 participants, ICYMARE will now go online in 2020 due to the Corona pandemic. Within the ICYMARE family we take care for each other and we do not want to put anybody at risk when travelling and meeting in bigger groups. However, it is nowadays even more important to connect, discuss our science within the community and create flexible plans for the future. And we want to support you: ICYMARE 2020 will enable smaller groups (of about ten people) to connect via a video conference and chat, presenting their research to each other, either topical or interdisciplinary. Voluntary hosts will moderate to make sure everyone gets a chance to discuss their science but also everything else around.

ICYMARE 2020 will be a complimentary online networking event on 26 and 27 August 2020. Participants are also given a chatroom where they can stay in touch after the video conference to create a long-lasting global and sustainable network among each other. This conference will be accompanied by a study on the use of online alternatives to on-site conferences and on how marine early-career researchers are dealing emotionally as well as regarding their research with the Corona pandemic.

ICYMARE is an event of the Bremen Society for Natural Sciences. For more info on how to get involved and support us, check out our homepage and feel free to contact us.
