Ocean Kinetics, a finalist in the Aquaculture Awards 2022 Supplier of the Year, is building on its reputation for creating solution-based engineering and fabrication services for the sector.
The company will be presenting examples of innovative developments for the industry, including the installation of a thermolicer treatment system and also a clean energy system to electrify fish farm barges using renewable energy - at the Aquacuture UK exhibition in Aviemore from 3-5 May.
The company, established in 1992 by managing director John Henderson as a specialist engineering and fabrication company for the aquaculture and fishing sector, sees the exhibition as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate how it can solve a whole range of technological issues. This includes a series of highly innovative engineering developments which has solved challenges in fish handling in hatcheries, factories, and on-board vessels, as well as underwater, offshore and onshore installations.
John Henderson commented: “While many other marine engineers will provide a manufacturing service, we look at the challenges first and then design and manufacture effective, practical solutions that are bespoke to an individual customer’s needs.
“The installation of the innovative thermolicer treatment system on Mull-based Inverlussa Marine Services new multi-purpose vessel, the ‘Kallista Helen’ is a perfect example. The 26-metre boat, on long-term lease to Scottish Seafarms, was designed to minimise fish handling and maximise fish welfare and the thermolicer gives Scottish Seafarms the ability to swiftly address any issues with sea lice, in order to maintain good fish health.
“We worked with ScaleAQ on the design and manufacture of key elements of the thermolicer, and the result has proved to be extremely efficient and highly effective. The pipework was designed and constructed for a swift and smooth journey for the fish, and a sophisticated separation system ensures that the sealice are not released back into the marine environment.”
The boat has recently won Best Offshore Aquaculture Workboat in the Baird Maritime Awards.
“We are also working on a collaborative initiative to develop a clean energy system specifically for the industry. Through the project, we aim to electrify fish farm barges using renewable energy, cutting the use of diesel generators, reducing operating costs, and lowering carbon emissions. This programme will deliver real financial and environmental benefits for the industry, and we are very much looking forward to sharing news of its progress at the Aviemore exhibition.”
The expansion of services in the aquaculture sector has also seen the company grow from its bases in Lerwick and Aberdeen, to a new base, which was recently opened in Oban, to service aquaculture installations on the west coast of Scotland.
