#MakeEUBlue: The European Union’s Blue Call to Action for the Ocean

Today, May 20th, during the European Maritime Day celebrations, the European Commissioner for Environment, Ocean and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, launched the #MakeEUBlue campaign.

Powered by the EU4Ocean Coalition, this initiative is a call on citizens, businesses, organizations, authorities, and celebrities to commit to an action that can benefit the ocean.

The ocean’s ability to serve as the Planet’s life support system is compromised by several threats, such as climate change, overfishing and pollution. Civil society’s response to turn this tipping point must be through a pledge for the ocean. Every pledge, even the smallest one, is vital to tackle the ocean crisis.

The Commissioner Sinkevičius, announced his own pledge, “Given that 1 in 5 fish are caught illegally, and given that we have the tools to combat illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, as Commissioner I pledge to redouble my efforts ensuring that more nations around the world ratify the Port State Agreement and to increase global awareness about importance of oceans in climate action.”

This is the moment to commit for a sustainable ocean. Ocean’s ambassadors and stakeholders did their pledge already.

Paul Rose, explorer, broadcaster and expedition leader of National Geographic Pristine Seas, pledged to link all his actions to ocean conservation, “At sea I will keep a sharp focus on how to convert our discoveries into ocean education and protection. When I am on land, I will consider all of my actions as having an ‘ocean effect’. My purchases, voting and communications will have a positive effect on our beautiful ocean.”

The #MakeEUBlue platform presents key facts about the state of the ocean and encourages all of us to choose our personal commitment and pledge for ocean sustainability.

Changing course requires us to work together. The Make Europe Blue campaign is calling on citizens, businesses, organizations, authorities, celebrities, educators to make a pledge to help the ocean. The pledges are a personal promise or action that will keep our ocean healthy.
