Scientific Meeting: Introduction to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The Centre for Blue Governance invites you to a research webinar introducing the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The transdisciplinary Centre for Blue Governance, University of Portsmouth, works towards a vision of healthy and well-governed aquatic systems for the planet's future. As part of an informative series of research webinars, Alan Evans, Head of Marine Policy at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, will present the journey from a 2017 UN General Assembly proclamation of a UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to the submission to the UN General Assembly in 2020 of an Implementation Plan as developed by the IOC-UNESCO.

The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (UN Decade) has an ambitious, transformative agenda developed to help reduce the decline in ocean health. The Decade Implementation Plan provides a non-prescriptive framework for transformational action that will build on existing achievements and deliver across geographies, sectors, disciplines, and generations.

Evans holds a number of positions at international fora, including as the Alternate Head of the UK Delegation at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO). It is in this capacity that he will share his experiences as a de-facto focal point for UK contributions to the development of the UN Decade. His talk will be held on 21st October 2020, 2:00-3:00pm (BST) and will outline:

  • the key Challenges, Objectives and anticipated initiatives which will require the involvement of an interdisciplinary network of stakeholders, including Early Career Ocean Professionals
  • finish with an overview of the UKs approach to bring visibility to UK contributions.
