Job Opportunity: Communications and Outreach Manager at San Diego Coastkeeper

Organizational Overview

Established in 1995, San Diego Coastkeeper protects and restores fishable, swimmable, drinkable water for San Diego. The organization uses advocacy, science, education, and community engagement to tackle persistent and emerging water quality and water supply issues across the San Diego region. Current advocacy and outreach priorities of the organization include advancing integrated water management, securing stormwater infrastructure improvements, protecting and restoring the region’s watersheds and coast, promoting water conservation and sustainable use, and furthering environmental justice. To advance these initiatives, Coastkeeper seeks an energetic, organized, and strategically minded individual to fill the position of communications and outreach manager.

Position Overview

The communications and outreach manager designs, plans, produces, and implements San Diego Coastkeeper’s internal and external communications and outreach projects and campaigns, and provides the programs, advocacy, and development teams with communications support. The communications and outreach manager is the organization's primary media contact, and will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with local and regional media outlets. This position also leads writing, production, and editing for a wide variety of communications and marketing tools and creates and distributes outreach materials to move the needle on outreach goals. Successful applicants will have experience advancing environmental issues through the use of strategic communications and outreach campaigns.

Responsibilities

  • Translating complex policy and science topics into compelling and digestible messaging
  • Producing and distributing organizational newsletters, eblasts, and mailings
  • Overseeing, growing, and maintaining the organization’s social media presence
  • Maintaining and improving the organizational website and blog; facilitating website content creation and updates; working with IT consultants to maintain website functionality
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with local and regional media; generating and distributing press releases, media alerts, and story pitches; representing the organization in a variety of print, radio, and television media appearances
  • Overseeing the organization’s outreach contracts, and working with partners to design, produce, and deliver impactful campaigns that further outreach priorities
  • Producing a wide variety of communications and marketing materials, such as program reports, annual reports, visual aids, videos, fact sheets, and fundraising materials
  • Maintaining and strengthening the organization’s brand, identity, and voice across all channels
  • Developing creative and impactful ways to tell the Coastkeeper story and build a sense of connection within the community
  • Working with development staff to create and implement fundraising campaigns and donor relations efforts
  • Working with the advocacy team to design and implement strategic communications campaigns to support ongoing and emerging advocacy initiatives
  • Managing contractors or interns, as needed

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or the environmental sciences AND at least three years of experience designing and implementing communications and outreach campaigns using a variety of communications tools and tactics; OR at least five years of experience designing and implementing communications and outreach campaigns using a variety of communications tools and tactics, two of which must be in a leadership position
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in communications and social marketing
  • Experience designing and implementing outreach campaigns
  • Proficiency with web design platforms, such as WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix
  • Working knowledge of email marketing software, such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact
  • Proficiency with Google Apps, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive, and Microsoft programs, including Word, Powerpoint, and Excel
  • A demonstrated commitment to protecting and restoring the environment and improving environmental outcomes for San Diego communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud or other editing, video-making, or design software
  • Experience grant writing and implementing fundraising campaigns
  • Spanish proficiency
  • Familiarity with local water issues
