Job Opportunity - Ocean Biogeochemical Data and Model Analyst with the NOC

About the role:

The National Oceanography Centre is seeking a talented and enthusiastic scientist with experience of analysis of models and observational data to join the Marine Systems Modelling Group at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton, UK. Focused on the global marine environment, this research position aims to improve understanding of the ocean’s role in climate and its associated societal impacts. The successful candidate will have research experience – and ideally a publication record – in the areas of ocean model analysis, remote sensing, marine biogeochemistry and/or climate change.

The successful candidate will work in the exciting area of climate change impacts, focusing on the biogeochemistry (BGC) of the North Atlantic and its role in climate, including future projections of climate change. They will join the CLASS Project, a research programme bringing together cutting-edge modelling and observational efforts across the UK. They will work closely with a wide range of models and observational datasets, and collaborate both across the UK and internationally. Collaborative publications in high impact scientific journals are a key expected outcome of this work.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment, initially available for 3 years. The NOC is a strategic research organisation that takes a long-term view when recruiting. While this is a Fixed Term Appointment, there may be potential to convert to a permanent appointment subject to operational requirements.

About the candidate:

  • Experience in analysing modelling or observational data, ideally in a climate or global earth systems context, and be skilled in using analysis and visualisation software, including programming skills.
  • 1st degree in a numerate scientific or mathematics discipline and will have completed a PhD in a numerate environmental science discipline or hold equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication, oral, written and presentation skills, and a publication record appropriate to your career stage.

Other information:

The starting salary for this position will be between £29,181 and £33,558 per annum (Band 6).
