Ocean Career: AIMS Research Ecotoxicologist

We are searching for an experienced scientist to join our Northern Territory AIMS team and support the development of ecotoxicological test methods (bioassays) for tropical marine species and the application of these tests to contaminants of environmental concern in tropical waters.

Your role will include the development of new toxicity test methods using the follow aspects: species selection and collection, determining and optimizing culture and test conditions, determining suitable endpoints, establishing QA/QC criteria and method documentation. In addition, a large part of the role will be the application and optimization of our in-house toxicity tests to assess the toxicity of industrial waste streams, the interpretation of toxicity data and communication of results to clients and stakeholders.

Working closely with our scientists and technical staff, you will also manage and train staff and students in the methods needed to obtain, analyze, and interpret ecotoxicological data sets and provide your expertise on larger research projects. You will promote the ecotoxicological capabilities at AIMS to relevant stakeholders and source funding to support the development of toxicity testing within the sustainable use of northwest marine ecosystems program.

About You

You will have achieved your Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to Marine Ecotoxicology and have substantial experience in the development and conduct of a wide range of ecotoxicological procedures, ideally using tropical marine species. You will be well known for your ecotoxicological expertise, and have proven experience in:

  • Undertaking consultancy research, writing project proposals and successful funding applications
  • Working within a research team, interacting, and collaborating with internal and external parties to achieve project and organizational objectives; and
  • Managing, analyzing, and interpreting complex data sets, and demonstrating a high level written and verbal technical communication skills.

  • AIMS AOF Level 5 salary ($109,976 to $120,564 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation
