Ocean Career: Aquaculture Breeding Programme Manager at Xelect Ltd

Xelect Ltd is a leading aquaculture genetics service provider, based in St Andrews, Scotland.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic aquaculture professional to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be educated to at least MSc level in aquaculture and/or animal genetics and breeding, with extensive relevant experience. The position is based at our headquarters in St. Andrews, Scotland, but will require some overseas travel. Xelect is at the forefront of genetic services to the aquaculture industry worldwide, serving customers in 20 countries. We offer complete genetics support to breeding programmes for multiple species of fish and shellfish, alongside expert consultancy on broodstock and aquaculture operations.

Xelect has offices, a modern genetics laboratory and DNA sequencing facility in the heart of the historic centre of St Andrews. Our breeding programme management services include genotyping, genetic calculations and practical support in client’s hatcheries. We also offer due diligence work, which involves carrying out audits on broodstock, hatchery operations, production, biosecurity, environmental monitoring, animal welfare, harvesting, processing, data management staff skills and training.

The positions require proficiency in statistical analysis and subsequent compiling of reports and presentations. The successful candidates would be expected to have excellent organisational and time management abilities, be able to work effectively on their own or as a member of a team and have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Essential skills:

  • A minimum of a MSc relating to aquaculture, quantitative genetics, fish reproduction or animal breeding.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge and experience of hatchery and broodstock management, including aquaculture operations more widely for finfish and/ or shellfish species.
  • Experience working within the aquaculture industry.
  • Excellent data management and computer literacy skills.
  • Willing to travel and experience working in other countries.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and programming platforms.

Desirable skills:

  • PhD relating to aquaculture, fish reproduction or animal breeding.
  • Proficiency with programming platforms R and / or Linux.
  • Advanced statistical skills including multivariate analysis.
  • Proficiency in other languages.
  • Peer reviewed publications in the field of aquaculture, reproduction or genetics.

Position: Permanent, Full time.
Salary: Competitive
Location: St Andrews, Fife.
