Ocean Career: Biologist at the New England Aquarium

As part of the New England Aquarium Rescue and Rehabilitation team, the Biologist I or II responds to stranded sea turtles along the coasts of Northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire; assesses the health of animals in the field and in the rehabilitation facility in Quincy MA, and provides care to these animals.

The Biologist also assists with and performs necropsies on deceased animals and supports Rescue Department operations including in the medical facility and with administrative responsibilities. The level of the position will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule is comprised of four ten-hour days including one weekend day. The facility is in Quincy MA and free parking is available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises the volunteers/interns in daily husbandry activities.
  • Supports the Rescue Rehabilitation office with filing and general organization. Places orders, files records and maintains an active inventory of husbandry, medical, and office supplies.
  • Under the supervision of the senior biologists', assists with federal reporting obligations, creates records for all animals assessed through the program and meets reporting deadlines.
  • Under the supervision of the senior biologists, maintains the rescue/rehab animal care hospital area including, coordinating general maintenance and constructing and maintaining life support systems.
  • Provides 24-hour coverage for the rescue hotline when assigned.
  • Responds to stranding calls, assesses animals and coordinates the pick-up, transport and relocation of animals handled by the stranding network.
  • Assists with and performs necropsies on deceased sea turtles using the prescribed methods and forms.
  • Under the direction of the senior biologists, organizes daily husbandry and medical treatment plans for hospital patients. Performs exams, gives injections, treats wounds, and collects blood samples.
  • Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience
Requires a Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Previous experience with cold-stunned turtles preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • General ability to learn, think and make decisions quickly while multi-tasking.
  • General knowledge of biology, anatomy and animal behavior.
  • Basic knowledge of animal care and husbandry, veterinary technology, photography, necropsy and database management.
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, and ACCESS software.
  • Previous exposure to aquariums, or animal care.
  • A working understanding of life support systems and equipment.
  • Experience in the use of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
