Biological Sciences at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science located in Gloucester Point, VA invites highly qualified applicants to apply for the Laboratory & Research Specialist to join their dynamic research team.
The Laboratory and Research Specialist will provide assistance with biological experiments and field work in the VIMS Marine Physiological Ecology laboratory. Reporting to the PI, an assistant professor, the position is charged with managing the operation of the aquarium research facility, analyzing samples, and providing general laboratory maintenance. Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Performs sample collection and preparation to include drying, weighing and homogenizations, etc.
- Conducts analysis (assays for total protein, enzyme activity, and oxidative stress).
- Maintains and deploys oceanographic equipment and process data from oceanographic sensors and enter data into spreadsheet/data repository.
- Ensures data integrity and update data methodology for publication and data repositories.
- Orders laboratory supplies, update Safety Data sheet files and maintain protocol for general laboratory procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent with demonstrated field experience
COMPETENCIES:
- Working knowledge of basic laboratory procedures used in the performance of routine laboratory tests, operation of basic laboratory equipment, and collection of data or samples.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and experimental procedures with the ability to adhere to details.
- Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple and competing priorities.
- Proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS Office Suite (Particularly Word & Excel). Ability to enter data into tracking sheet and audit for data integrity.
- Solid analytical skills with the ability to conduct basic analyses and report on findings.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal external constituencies, and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to learn new processes and equipment quickly and put into practice.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in collection and analysis of laboratory samples.
- Experience with field work.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience directly related to the position.
COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of animal physiology with the ability to culture and maintain research aquaria.
- Knowledge of oceanographic sensor technology, with the ability to deploy equipment and collect / retrieve data.
- Knowledge of best practices for carbonate chemistry measurements in seawater (spectrophotometric pH, total alkalinity) .
- Familiarity with Matlab, R, ImageJ, with demonstrated skills in performing analysis.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in animal culturing and maintaining research aquaria.
- Experience in biochemical assays (e.g. protein/enzyme, lipid).
- Experience in working with oceanographic equipment, performing in house calibrations, collecting and processing time series data
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- This is a non-exempt position eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and university policy.
- This position may be subject to long hours during peak high times, etc. as directed and approved by supervisor. During larval culturing and field seasons, early, late, and weekend hours are sometimes necessary.
- This is a restricted position subject to availability of funding.

Salary Range: Up to $35,000 commensurate with experience
