Ocean Career: Marine Microbiologist at UC San Diego

Under supervision, assist with a National Cancer Institute project to preserve and identify a collection of marine bacteria. Culture and cryopreserve marine bacteria, perform molecular identification by extracting DNA and performing PCR, analyze data, track status of projects and generate reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge of and experience in marine microbiology. Experience working in a scientific laboratory.
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in general lab protocols. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.
  • Experience analyzing data. Ability to synthesize data.
  • Experience in sterile technique, pipetting, and media preparation.
  • Experience performing DNA extraction and PCR.
  • Strong computer skills. Computer competence in Word and Excel.
  • Experience working in a biological safety cabinet.
  • Knowledge of and hands-on experience in culturing marine bacteria.
  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines and milestones.
  • Prior experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials.
  • Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner. Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty and students. Participate and contribute to discussions regarding procedures and goals of research projects.

Salary: $24.16 per hour
