The Marine Biological Association has owned Research Vessels (RVs) since 1896 and currently operates two; MBA Sepia, a 15.45 m Category 2 coded workboat and MBA Laminaria, a Category 4 coded RIB. Both vessels operate locally out of Plymouth, principally supporting The MBA’s research activities.
In addition, we are increasingly working with a range of external organizations from research, education, and commercial sectors.
Working within the RVs team is an exciting and challenging role and we are looking to appoint an experienced Crew Member to support operations at sea. This is a hands-on physical role and would suit individuals with a background working on small workboats or commercial fishing vessels. The Crew Member will work under direction of the RVs Skipper, ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of vessels. The role will contribute to mobilization and demobilization of vessel and equipment on survey days, safe deployment and recovery of a range of scientific sampling equipment (e.g. benthic grabs, plankton tow nets and scientific fishing gear), ensuring the vessel is clean, tidy and ready for travel, supporting the work of scientists and students whilst on board, and ensuring passenger safety. In addition, the Crew Member will undertake a range of maintenance and engineering tasks, therefore demonstrable experience of diesel engine maintenance is required.
Salary and Benefits
