Ocean Career: Ocean Science Data Analyst at Sofar

At Sofar we connect the world’s oceans. We build the technology to create global awareness of ocean weather, climate, and ocean health. Our unique ocean data provides insights to science and society, and our products make ocean industries more sustainable. As a mission-driven team we combine the best in ocean science and Bay Area innovation to capture the canvas of our oceans and drive the new Blue Economy.

The Position

The Ocean Science Team at Sofar has an exciting position available as data analyst that will operate at the intersection between ocean science, ocean operations and marketing. Specifically we are looking for someone who will help interpret and communicate ocean science findings, observations and results into understandable and visually compelling stories that can be shared by marketing for a broad audience. Together with our Ocean Science team, you will identify stories of interest, aggregate the data from our models and observations needed to tell the story, and formulate the baseline visuals to collaborate with our marketing team on developing the final story. Sofar is in an incredible era of ocean discovery and we are looking for the story teller and data wizard to share it with the world.

Some projects you’ll be a part of:

  • During the next hurricane season, Sofar will deploy tens of Spotters inside hurricanes to help better understand and predict extreme weather. We hope to translate and communicate that data in real time to generate excitement about the work done at Sofar and wrangle the data for sharing among scientific partners.
  • We collect unique data in sensitive marine areas (e.g. coral reefs) and remote places (e.g. Antarctica) and want to tell the stories of our sensors and the data captured through original visualizations and narratives.
  • Sofar is constantly expanding its global distributed network of ocean sensors across the world's oceans. You will be involved in scoping deployments and monitoring data from this network, and create the stories and narratives we can share related to this network.

Responsibilities

  • General data wrangling and analysis tasks as part of the Ocean Science team
  • Be the link between the Ocean Science and Marketing teams, with some stories capturing events in real-time with short lead times
  • Aggregate relevant model and observation data via API's and create compelling visualizations
  • Own the continuous monitoring and exploration of our network and models to craft narratives at a bi-monthly, or greater, cadence

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Background in oceanography and/or meteorology
  • Working knowledge of Python
  • Excellent data visualization skills
  • Experience wrangling large geophysical datasets
  • Strong geospatial intuition and mapping experience
  • Passion for science communication and storytelling to a broad audience

Bonus Points

  • Graduate degree in Oceanography, Meteorology or related fields
  • Experience with scientific communication
