Ocean Career: Oceanographic Field Technical Services Manager at Scripps

Reporting to the Manager, Shipboard Technical Support (STS), the Oceanographic Technical Service (OTS) Manager is responsible for managing technical department groups that support operations on SIO vessels.

Oversees all oceanographic technical services planning activities that include oversight of the logistics planning and instrumentation preparation for research cruises. Additionally, the OTS Manager coordinates staff participation from these groups in technical support projects on non-SIO vessels. Monitors staffing levels, program budget, and instrumentation requirements. Assesses the success of research cruise support to maintain the highest standards of marine technical support. Provides recommendations to senior leadership on annual support proposals and the streamlining of vessel research activities. Provides leadership and direction to the Research Technician (Restech) Group and Computing Resources Group (STS-CR). Occasional evenings and weekends required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Broad skills to facilitate and collaborate with a diverse group of constituencies on short- and long-term field research operations and planning.
  • Proven analytical, research and report preparation skills to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field site research responsibility.
  • Broad knowledge of facility planning and management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.
  • Proven skills in leadership, staff motivation, and team-building.
  • Broad knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.
  • Advanced communication skills with broad range of research partners and project team members.
  • Education in the principles of operation, calibration, accuracy, and precision of oceanographic instrumentation.
  • Hands on experience in seagoing scientific operations and data collection. Proven leadership in directing shipboard scientific operations.
  • Engineering knowledge in field and laboratory instrument design. Thoroughly familiar with scientific and engineering units used in research data acquisition, processing, and publications.
  • Skill in the analyses of complex problems involving the design of research vessel science spaces and facilities for multi-disciplinary oceanographic research support support.
  • Ability to make decisions with often incomplete or partial information.
  • Proven strong management experience with the skills to lead numerous personnel towards exceptional performance and customer service.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to understand complex oceanographic research objectives and develop the logistics support plans to support those objectives.
  • Ability to interpret technical project details and provide accurate budgetary estimates.
  • Proven experience planning and coordinating seagoing oceanographic research.
  • Proven experience organizing and executing complex domestic and international shipping logistics.
  • Prior experience communicating effectively with and working cooperatively with a broad range of ship' crew. Technical and research personnel.
  • Working knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation systems and oceanographic data acquisition systems.
  • Proficiency with machine tools, hand tools, and the safety programs necessary to manage use.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience.
  • Masters degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Current State of California Drivers License required.
  • Must possess a US Passport.
  • Must be willing and able to travel globally often spending 2-3 months at sea per year.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
