Ocean Career: XOCEAN Shallow Marine Geophysicist

XOCEAN is an ocean data company—we collect data for clients ranging from mapping the seabed to monitoring the environment. However, we do this differently, instead of using conventional crewed survey ships, we have developed a marine robotic system known as an uncrewed surface vessel (USV).

Overview

Responsible for geophysical data collection, processing, interpretation, and reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Remote data acquisition and processing of MBES, Side-scan Sonar, & shallow 2D Sub-bottom Sensors.
  • Online surveying on projects in shifts.
  • Side scan sonar data processing including seabed picking, interpretation, production of mosaic and seabed features.
  • Shallow 2D Seismic processing and interpretation.
  • Support Lead Geophysicist with Survey Planning
  • Survey System Setup—hardware and software configuration prior to vessel mobilization on a project.
  • Quality Control—monitoring of the data being captured using online survey tools.
  • Assessment of survey results and adjustment of survey plan as required.
  • Data processing and quality control of survey geophysical data, creating final deliverables to a high standard.
  • Report writing and client interaction.

Occasional Responsibilities:

  • Support with bathymetry data acquisition and processing
  • Managing and maintaining Quality, Environment and Health and Safety standards including update, implementation and management of all ISO processes as appropriate to the role.
  • Implementing, maintaining, managing, and updating all standard operating procedures and processes appropriate to the role.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Geoscience or Geophysics.
  • Acquisition and processing experience of MBES, Side-scan Sonar, & Shallow sub-bottom Sensors.
  • Experience in one or more of Kingdom, Chesapeake SonarWiz, DUG Insight and RadEx Pro processing software packages.
  • Sidescan Sonar processing experience to include seabed picking; target ID, tagging and listing; the creation and export of navigationally and gain corrected mosaics.
  • Production of seabed features based on SSS, MBES and backscatter.
  • Shallow 2D Seismic data processing to include SEGy conversion/tidal reduction and export, band-pass and denoise filtering, acoustic-gain control, interpretation and export of subsurface horizons and contact hyperbolas.
  • 5 years Marine Survey Experience.
  • Strong computer literacy (Configuration of sensor equipment required).
