The Physical Oceanography Department is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join their team. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with possible second year continuation contingent on progress and funding.

Job Summary

Postdoctoral position in satellite air-sea fluxes at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Essential Functions:

WHOI are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent scientist for a postdoctoral investigator position. The postdoc will work with a team on a NASA-funded project, Earth System Data Records (ESDR) of Air-Sea Variables and Fluxes. The goal of the project is to establish ESDR of air-sea turbulent heat, moisture, and momentum fluxes over the global ice-free ocean by using advanced and modern approaches to best capitalize on satellite observations from active and passive microwave sensors over the past 30+ years. Research will include developing innovative machine learning algorithms to improve satellite retrievals of near-surface humidity and temperature and to improve the quantification of air-sea flux variability on meso and sub-daily scales. The project will offer opportunity to explore the global ocean surface energy budget, the ocean water cycle and moisture transport, and atmosphere-ocean interactions from meso to basin scales. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and execution of research and interpretation of scientific results. He/she should have strong experience in satellite observations and air-sea fluxes and interactions, in addition to sound communication skills in both written and spoken forms.

While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the postdoctoral investigator will have an opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences or relevant fields.
  • Strong experience in using satellite active and passive microwave observations for modeling, data analysis, and visualization.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively.
  • Sufficient computer and programming skills including Fortran, MatLab, and Unix Shell.
  • Good knowledge and experience of Python and deep learning libraries are preferable.

Physical Requirements:

Physical duties for this position include, but are not limited to, ability to distinguish basic colors as well as visual abilities to include near, far, and peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear, talk, travel, work around others as well as alone. This position is continuously sedentary. Physical duties are subject to change.
