UK Marine and Coastal Student Awards Taking Applications

P1 Marine Foundation today announced its partnership with The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for the 2015 National Student Awards.

IMarEST joins the Marine Conservation Society in partnering with the P1 Marine Foundation for its 2015 National Student Awards, which supports research projects from UK students in higher education that can help to provide solutions to the threats to the marine and coastal environment.

The IMarEST is a professional body that brings together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body. As a partner for the 2015 Awards they have contributed the following prizes:

1st prize -The winning project will feature in the international industry publication, the Marine Professional as well as being published in Marine Technical Notes (a technical journal). The winner will also receive a voucher worth £50. All winners will receive an IMarEST book ‘Coral Reefs: A Handbook for Their Future’.

This is in addition to the original prizes which are £1000 for the winner, £500 for one runner up and the Wakefield Memorial Award of £500.

The entries will be judged by a panel which includes Dr Laura Foster, Marine Conservation Society Pollution Program Manager; Maya Plass, Marine Biologist and Presenter; Kirsty Schneeberger MBE, Advisor at UNFCCC and co-founder of Beautiful Corporations and Dr Trevor Dixon, Marine Pollution Specialist at Advisory Committee of the Protection of the Sea.

The seas and oceans play an important role in our daily lives in many ways: helping to regulate our climate, as a source of food, for commerce, transport and leisure. The UK itself has some of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, including over 8,000 different species and important seabird populations. However, there are still many threats to this natural resource which hinder a healthy future for its habitats and species.

The IMarEST has demonstrated its commitment to the next generation of marine professionals by offering complimentary student membership to all students on marine related courses. This gives students access to a number of valuable resources to support them throughout their undergraduate and post graduate studies.
