Underwater Drone Gets Incredible Response from Public Backers

In what has to be one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, OpenROV’s new Trident Underwater Drone has raised 14 times the $50,000 goal set by the company. In fact, according to OpenROV spokespersons, they met their initial goal six minutes into the campaign.

Readers may remember OpenROV from a feature story in ECO Magazine (January 2015).

Their latest ROV, Trident, has a unique design that combines the versatility and control of an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) and the efficiency of an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). It can fly in long, straight survey lines called "transects" as well as perform delicate maneuvers in tight spaces, all while maintaining a sleek and powerful form factor.

Of course, it’s easy to see why. Anyone who pledged $599 in the early days of the campaign will receive a Trident drone with a tether and wireless topside buoy (these packages are all gone, but similar offers will continue until October 31).
