ECO Magazine and IOC-UNESCO Announce Partnership to Support the UN Ocean Decade

ECO Magazine (Environment, Coastal and Offshore) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO have announced a new Editorial Partnership for 2020 in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The United Nations (UN) has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean.

ECO Magazine, a leading international trade publication reporting on core topics, critical issues and emerging trends in ocean science, innovation and exploration, will support the Decade’s communication campaign from 2020. The new Editorial Partnership aims to further enhance social awareness of the Decade’s key messages by disseminating important updates to the wider ocean community and key stakeholders.

Kira Coley, senior editor at ECO Magazine, said “The UN’s Decade of Ocean Science will offer a unique framework for academia, governments and industry to join forces and create solutions for the issues we are witnessing today within our ocean and along our coasts.”

“Over the next 10 years, media in all its forms will play a hugely important role in relaying information about timely opportunities that will enable action within the international ocean community. As an ocean-focused publication, we are honored to partner with UNESCO’s IOC and support the Decade in the coming years.”

Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of UNESCO’s IOC, further highlighted the important role of media partnership in furthering the objectives of the UN Decade and the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Never before has there been such a dire need for the open flow of targeted information between research and academia, on the one hand, and government and society, on the other, to ensure that ocean knowledge is bringing new solutions and technology to address the major challenges of our time: climate change, the ocean’s declining health with its subsequent impact on human well-being and ability to sustain growing human population and blue economy. This is what the Ocean Decade will be about – transforming knowledge into solutions to concrete problems. And we need the media onboard playing an active role in scaling up this process.”

In 2020, a new section dedicated to the Decade will appear in ECO Magazine providing exclusive content to its readers. Moreover, announcements and updates will be shared in support of the Decade’s communication campaign on ECO’s website and social media channels. A representative from IOC will join ECO’s new 2020 Advisory Editorial Board to ensure the flow of Decade-related information to the magazine’s readers and wider ocean community.

In celebration of the Decade’s official launch in 2021, the magazine will be publishing a dedicated Special Issue which will be distributed at the kick-off conference taking place in Berlin, Germany in April that year.
