The Ocean Conservation Trust (OCT) is a charity with the vision of a world supporting a healthy Ocean to sustain all life. The OCT also operates the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
OCT have been awarded National Lottery Heritage UK in conjunction with the DEFRA Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The project runs for 14 months and aims to restore subtidal seagrass beds within Marine Conservation zones by taking an innovative and fresh approach to seagrass restoration with the aim of benefitting fisheries and carbon sequestration.
This is an amazing opportunity for an experienced horticulturalist / grower to be involved in groundbreaking efforts to safeguard one of the UK’s most important marine habitats. The role compliments an established seagrass restoration team working on a similar project with EU funding. An interest in applied conservation is desirable.
This is an amazing opportunity for a grower / botanist with an interest in marine plants. OCT are looking for someone with proven experience in horticulture and propagation, specifically with aquatic plants and with a knowledge of irrigation, pest and disease monitoring. You will be comfortable with working in all weather conditions and be passionate about producing the best quality stock of seagrass ready for re-planting in the coastal waters around Torbay.
The role will involve working within a seagrass growing facility based at the Dartside Quay, Galmpton. Working hours and workloads vary according to the crop, season and planting cycle. Flexibility is essential at peak times, for example before planting periods. High standards of quality and quantity control are demanded and tight deadlines have to be met. Resilience in the face of challenge is essential for this role.
The role is full time (37.5 hours a week) although hours can be flexible. You will be involved in the establishment and ongoing management of the site so being practically minded and hands on with tools will come in useful.
