Kelly Kryc, Ph.D., has been appointed as NOAA’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Fisheries.
In this role, Kryc will engage in high-level development and coordination of NOAA international fisheries policy and fisheries bilateral and multilateral meetings with foreign nations, and advance key U.S. priorities to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. She will provide policy guidance on various aspects of NOAA’s international fisheries work, such as sustainable management of international fish stocks, the protection of marine resources, and supporting the export of U.S. fisheries products.
“Dr. Kryc brings well-rounded perspectives to address the complex challenges associated with international fisheries—from food and economic security to the sustainability of shared marine resources and the impacts of climate change—and I look forward to Kelly’s leadership as NOAA works with partners to strengthen fisheries management practices internationally,” said NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D.
Kryc has extensive public sector, academic, non-profit, and legislative experience in energy and environment policy. Most recently, she was a senior fellow for energy and environment with the Center for American Progress, and held previous positions with the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the U.S. State Department, The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the U.S. Department of the Interior. She is also an adjunct faculty member of Georgetown University’s Science in Public Interest Program where she teaches science policy.

Kryc received a Ph.D. in earth science from Boston University, an M.S. in oceanography from the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, and a B.A., in geology and marine science from Middlebury College in Vermont.
