On April 3, the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center launched the Vessel Information Verification Service (VIVS), a new online tool designed to allow commercial vessel operators and owners to verify the accuracy of their Automatic Identification System broadcasts.
The web-based tool allows vessel owners and operators to search for their vessels by name, call sign, number, or owner and compare their AIS broadcasts against the information the Coast Guard and other agencies have on file. The Coast Guard has noted that, in addition to being required by regulation, accurate broadcasts help to enhance safety on the waterways by contributing to more efficient vessel management and reducing the risk of collision.
VIVS information will be updated daily, excluding weekends and holidays, by NAVCEN staff. In addition to the use of VIVS, the Coast Guard encourages vessel owners and operators to utilize the AIS Encoding Guide to ensure AIS transponders are properly encoded.
