Job Opportunity: Structural Engineer - Offshore Wind

Location: Bristol, U.K.

 

Reporting to the Blades Manager, the Structural Engineer will lead the structural design of the tidal turbine blades for the Atlantis group of companies: tasks will include:

• Structural sizing and optimization of composite and metallic structures
• Structural design of tidal turbine blades (& liaising with external consultants as appropriate)
• Development of in-house stress methods and toolsets (static/fatigue sizing, laminate design, bolted joint methods, spar methods etc)
• Developing blade optimization methods and toolsets
• Developing materials databases
• Specification of development and qualification test plans
• Management of structural tests from coupon level to blade level
• Laminate design of blades and root connection
• Specification of production drawings
• Generation of generic repair schemes
• Working on design and manufacture solutions to drive-out cost

 

The candidate:

The person must be degree qualified and have gained relevant industrial experience which must include:

• structural sizing of composite and metallic structures for load bearing and fatigue critical applications
• development and qualification testing of high value load bearing components
• composite production methods and facilities
• composite design eg laminate layups
• 2d drawings for production environments
• project management and project leadership

 

The ideal candidate is likely

• To come from a wind turbine, aerospace or naval architecture background
• To be familiar with finite element (FE) methods, preferably ANSYS APDL and Workbench
• To have experience modeling composite structures using FE, preferably ANSYS ACP
• To have programming skills, preferably Matlab, Python, VBA
• To be familiar with DNV-GL design guidelines for offshore wind and tidal turbines
• To be familiar with the design of highly loaded bolted joints according to VDI
• To be a Chartered Engineer or seeking Chartership
• Has at least 5 years relevant experience
