Ocean Career: Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Marine Resources Technical Assistant

BOPP (Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme) is a community-driven program to strengthen ocean protection and sustainable economic development in Bermuda.

The program stems from a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government of Bermuda, the Waitt Institute, and Bermuda Government and Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS).

The goals of the MOU include developing and implementing 1) a comprehensive marine spatial plan to sustainably manage Bermuda’s marine waters and fully protect 20%, 2) a blue economy strategy to promote economic diversification and growth, social inclusion, and livelihoods while ensuring environmental sustainability, and 3) projects to support improved fisheries management, where appropriate. BOPP builds on Bermuda’s goals and existing initiatives, employing an approach that is science-based, participatory, and inclusive.

BOPP is seeking an assistant to support the work of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources within the Ministry of Home Affairs. This Contractor will not be a Government employee but will be supervised by DENR Marine Resources staff. The role will include helping to conduct research and analyze data on a variety of marine species, stocks of “fish,” marine habitats and fishing practices, and working with Marine Resources staff to further the goals of Bermuda's Marine Spatial Plan and associated fisheries-related activities.

Tasks:

  • Assist Marine Resources staff in conducting original research, monitoring and collecting information on marine species and habitats, including both field and laboratory work
  • Help enter and analyze data using both spreadsheets and databases.
  • Help produce reports and scientific papers on information and analyses
  • Support Marine Resources staff to further the goals of Bermuda's Marine Spatial Plan and associated fisheries-related activities

Professional Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biological or environmental science, with an emphasis on marine biology, fisheries or related discipline
  • Knowledge of basic biological statistical analysis, field biological methods and basic laboratory methods
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in field and laboratory biology, either through professional experience or as part of a degree program
  • Certified SCUBA diver
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of Bermuda's marine ecology and fauna
  • Not required but desired:
    • Experience with statistical analysis software in addition to MS Excel
    • Experience in boat handling
    • Experience with GIS software

  • Full-time, 1-year contract position with strong potential for renewal during the continuation of the program
