Ocean Career: Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Research Technician

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences seeks a Research Technician to support applied and fundamental research projects in the Marine Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, focusing on the environmental fate of oil hydrocarbons after oil spills and of PFAS.

This position will include planning and conducting of experiments, sample collection and preparation, GC-MS and LC-MS analysis (hydrocarbons, PFAS), and data evaluation and summarizing. The successful candidate will also carry out data handling and organization (using spreadsheets and R) and perform instrument maintenance and laboratory upkeep. This position may include occasional fieldwork and instruction of interns.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent in chemistry or related fields (biology, environmental sciences, etc.)
  • At least one year of demonstrated experience with sample preparation for organic compound analysis and analytical instrumentation, ideally with GC-MS, HPLC or LC-MS/MS.
  • Ability to be organized, to complete tasks on time, and to advance multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work with close attention to detail and keep comprehensive records of data, metadata, and laboratory procedures.
  • General understanding of good lab practices and quality control procedures.
  • Willingness and initiative to learn, practice, and use new skills and techniques, and work as part of a team.

Salary is commensurate with demonstrated experience, ranging from $42,00-60,000 per year, and comes with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.
