The Department of Marine Resources (DMR), Bureau of Marine Sciences, is seeking applicants with strong analytical, scientific writing, and managerial skills. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a new program focused on modeling marine mammal populations, including occupancy, habitat suitability, risk assessments, and forecasting in the Gulf of Maine. This includes setting program priorities for model development, designing model frameworks to answer priority management questions, building collaborations, testing model uncertainty and sensitivity, and publishing work in peer-reviewed literature.
This position will also oversee the habitat survey program. Other priority questions may stem from a broad range of topics including the impacts of climate change, offshore wind development, and fishery management measures on coastal Maine fisheries. This position is also responsible for leading research proposals to external funding sources and generating scientific publications to disseminate results.
Applicants should demonstrate experience with marine science research, fisheries or marine mammal biology, statistical analyses, and scientific writing in peer-reviewed literature. Experience using different modeling techniques to answer questions about large whale biology, distribution, and management is preferred. Expertise in R, GIS, and programming languages is preferred. A proven ability to develop and participate in successful collaborative partnerships with regulatory, research, and nongovernmental organizations is also desirable.
Additionally, there may be opportunities to represent the department at state, interstate, and federal meetings. This is a supervisory position responsible for evaluating and coaching the performance of subordinates and advising the Division Director on personnel concerns and issues. Supervision is exercised over a staff of professional and technical personnel. Work is performed under limited supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management or related field, including experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Compensation: $65,249.60-$89,065.60/Annually
