This Assistant Director and scientist position will act as the leading expert for conducting nearshore acoustic surveys and for acquiring hydrographic data. The position is responsible for leading both programs for the Center.
First, the Assistant Director will lead the day-to-day operations of nearshore, shallow water acoustic surveys within the Seafloor Mapping Program and second, co-lead field work to set up and maintain field instrumentation, data collection, processing, and analysis throughout the Cape Lab.
The position requires proficiency and daily use of Cape Lab’s acoustic instruments including the Edgetech 6205 phase-measuring side-scan sonar (550/1600 kHz), the Edgetech 4125 (600/1600 kHz), and the Teledyne RDI Sentinel V ADCP (1000 kHz) and two main acoustic survey platforms, a customized, shallow-draft, research vessel (27′ Eastern) and a custom-built 12′ ultra-shallow draft (—0.5 ft) pontoon. Additionally, seafloor mapping responsibilities include: the acquisition of hydrographic data during day cruises based primarily from the Marine Lab in Provincetown and occasionally other locations; lead the processing of bathymetric and side-scan data; field work will using RTK-GPS instruments, deployment and maintenance of various data loggers and sampling equipment; catalogue, post-process and manage samples and data (e.g. sediment, photographic, etc.) collected in the field for further analysis; and field planning and logistics, including but not limited to coordinating with boat captains, local harbormasters, and other departments at the Center. This position is stationed at The Center’s Hiebett Marine Lab in Provincetown, Massachusetts and sit in the Marine Geology Department. WFH not permitted.
Minimum requirements:
Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent degrees accepted) in Oceanography, Marine Sciences or any closely related scientific field of study and I year of experience in any related occupations conducting hydrographic research and acquisition of hydrographic data.
