Ocean Career: CFER Marine Fisheries Ecosystems Research Scientist

The Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) is in an exciting period of expansion and invites applications for a Research Scientist position(s) in marine and/or fisheries ecosystems. Requirements for this position include a PhD in marine ecology, biological oceanography, fisheries science or a closely related discipline with related experience in the North Atlantic or similar marine ecosystems.

CFER was created in 2010 with a mandate to conduct research and training on fisheries science of the North Atlantic, the Canadian Arctic and other similar ecosystems internationally. CFER has built a dynamic team of research scientists and technical personnel with varying specialties and is now the largest university-based capture fisheries research group in Canada. CFER supports graduate programs in fisheries science and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows play key roles in CFER research. Please go to www.mi.mun.ca/cfer for additional information.

CFER is part of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University which is Canada’s most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research and industrial support for the ocean industries. Memorial is a dynamic university with teaching and research programs of international distinction. The University has more than 18,500 undergraduate and graduate students supported by 1,100 faculty members and a staff of over 2,500 employees. St. John’s is a family friendly vibrant city, with mild winters and comfortable summers, with a rich culture and history and provides the best of outdoor lifestyles and activities along with city living. Please visit www.newfoundlandlabrador.com for more information.

To complement and extend existing research capabilities, CFER is seeking scientists that have expertise in one or several of the following fields:

  1. Biological Oceanography (Marine Productivity)
  2. Marine Invertebrate Ecology (Commercial Species)
  3. Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment
  4. Coastal Ecology

Successful applicants will be required to develop a dynamic, internationally recognized and grant supported research program focusing largely on Atlantic or Arctic marine ecosystems, have excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to supervise graduate students. The ability to work collaboratively with industry, fish harvesters, academic colleagues, and government agencies is also important.
