Ocean Career: Maine Bureau of Marine Science Marine Resource Scientist

This position assists in leading the Maine/New Hampshire Inshore Trawl survey. The survey operates 5-weeks, twice a year, to assess populations and assemblages of groundfish and crustaceans out to the 100-fathom depth profile.

Research is conducted on a 54’ contracted commercial groundfish boat. Up to 120 tows of a specially designed otter trawl are conducted between southern New Hampshire and the Canadian border each spring and fall. Participation on the survey cruise is essential requiring statewide overnight stays for up to 6 days for 5 consecutive weeks. Overnight stays of 1 or 2 nights aboard the vessel may be required as well. Specific duties include planning and coordination of logistical operations of the survey, inventory and purchasing equipment, and data management. Other tasks include participation on the trawl survey as lead scientist, report writing, presentation of research findings, and data analysis. This position will also be responsible for leading the age and growth lab at DMR and will age samples collected during the trawl survey. This position also represents the Department at regional scientific teams like the monkfish plan development team and the NEAMAP technical committee. This is a field intensive position which may require working in adverse weather conditions on a vessel for long periods of time.

Desired skills include:

  • Knowledge of survey and sampling methods of fish populations and stock assessments.
  • Experience in identification of Gulf of Maine fish
  • Experience working long periods at sea
  • Statistical analysis, as well as project management experience and familiarity with relational database structure and implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work as a leader and part of a team

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working alongside fishing industry members and have knowledge of MS Access, SQL, GIS (ArcPro), and statistical software such as R.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline, or equivalent in directly related work experience; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management or related field.

Salary:

$47,611.20–$64,230.40/Annually
