Ocean Career: Maine Department of Marine Resources Marine Resource Specialist II

The Department of Marine Resources is seeking a motivated, independent individual to fill a Specialist II-level position in the Recreational Fisheries Program. This position is responsible for planning and coordinating the Large Pelagic Survey and Volunteer Angler Logbook program, under minimal supervision.

This position acts as the lead worker for the Large Pelagic Survey and will functionally supervise other specialists, technicians, and seasonal workers. Coordination of the project includes regular communication and coordination with federal staff and contractors implementing the program and NOAA Fisheries’ managers. This position also participates in the Access Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS) conducting interviews onshore and at sea as well as helping with coordination, scheduling, and training, for this project. A significant portion of assignments will occur during non-traditional work hours, including evenings and weekends. The incumbent is expected to accurately identify, and measure fish species, correctly complete electronic datasheets, and strictly adhere to survey protocol. The position also provides outreach to Maine recreational anglers, participating at sportsmen’s shows, giving presentations, creating printing materials, and creating posters/pamphlets to educate anglers on Maine’s saltwater recreational regulations. The ability to travel throughout the Maine coast is required.

The position also participates in other sampling and field/survey work such as the ME/NH inshore trawl survey, urchin and shrimp portside sampling programs, and others as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:

Preference will be given to applicants that possess the following:

  1. Undergraduate degree in biology, marine science, or closely related field.
  2. Experience with marine recreational fishing and Gulf of Maine recreational fish species identification.
  3. Experience with face-to-face public interaction conducting surveys (e.g., standardized interviews/questionnaires).
  4. Computer software experience (e.g., data entry, preliminary analyses utilizing Microsoft Office programs, GIS and R).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five (5) years’ experience and/or education in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data to include a minimum of one year of experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work.

Salary: $39,873.60 - $53,123.20
