Ocean Career: NatureMetrics Business Development Manager

NatureMetrics is on a mission to turn nature into data. We are a rapid-growth scientific technology company that uses environmental DNA to deliver essential data on biodiversity to decision-makers across a range of sectors including infrastructure, extractives, fresh water, conservation, and marine & energy.

We are also expanding into nature-based solutions, food and consumer goods supply chains, agriculture, and financial services. 

We have grown rapidly since our creation in 2016. NatureMetrics has delivered projects in over 70 different countries, servicing them from our HQ and main lab in Guildford, our new lab in Canada, and via our business development team in the UK, continental Europe, South Africa, and North America. We have successfully raised money through a series of investment rounds to position the organization for rapid growth and are seeing our project revenues grow rapidly too. We aim to be the premier provider of nature data to companies globally by 2025.

Scope of the Job 

You will be part of a team of business developers, each responsible for different geographical regions and sectors and will report to our sector manager and ultimately the Business Development Director. You will also work closely with the rest of our team. The role will ideally be based in our offices in the Egham area but this is not a prerequisite. The role may also involve occasional travel. This is a role that carries a high level of responsibility. You will be comfortable working autonomously where necessary but must ultimately thrive as part of a team. 

Familiarity with the tools we use (e.g., environmental DNA and metabarcoding) is helpful but not essential for this role since full training will be provided. Of greater importance is experience with the mining and extractive industry, preferably in the field of environmental management, ecology, biodiversity science/ conservation. 

Responsibilities

  • Establishing key partnerships and strong networks with companies in the mining and extractives industry. 
  • Develop business opportunities in the sector including running workshops for stakeholders and providing training on how DNA-based tools can be integrated into monitoring strategies.   
  • Assist the sector manager with customer account management for clients operating in the sector in different regions of the world, which includes consulting on survey design and ensuring timely delivery of projects by coordinating with the laboratory and operations teams. 
  • Train clients in the collection of eDNA samples. This may occasionally include joining survey teams in the field in remote locations. 
  • Work with our business development team, Research Scientists and Statistician to advise clients on sampling design 
  • Work with the NatureMetrics operations team to ensure supply of sampling equipment to clients and to procure relevant permits to work and export samples where necessary. 
  • Establish and maintain a working relationship with key partners and subcontractors. 
  • Work with the wider business development team within NatureMetrics to develop opportunities with the largest clients operating internationally. 
  • Maintain regular communications with the NatureMetrics team when overseas, complying with our policies and procedures at all times and upholding our standards and the core elements of our brand. 
  • Build strong relationships with partners, collaborators, and clients in the sector. 
  • Engage closely with the wider team to stay up to date with projects. 
  • Work with our marketing team to assist with the production of online content and training materials  

Experience, Qualifications & Knowledge

  • No specific level of education is required but at least an MSc is preferable   
  • Experience working with clients, consulting, project management and engagement with the commercial industries.  
  • A background in ecology, biodiversity science, conservation, environmental management or similar 
  • Attention to detail, excellent communication, and presentation skills. 

It would also be an advantage to have: 

  • Experience in the mining & extractives industry 
  • Experience in negotiating commercial contracts 
  • An existing network of stakeholders in the extractives industry 
  • Experience working on environmental impact assessment projects 
  • An understanding of environmental DNA and metabarcoding would be advantageous but not essential
  • Experience in science outreach activities and education
