Ocean Career: NIOZ AUV/ROV Technician

The Royal Netherlands Institute for Marine Research (NIOZ) is looking for a driven, creative and curious AUV/ROV Technician for the National Marine Facilities (NMF) department, Support team on Texel.

THE INSTITUTE

The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) is the national oceanographic institute and conducts and promotes academically excellent multidisciplinary fundamental and ground-breaking applied marine research. NIOZ focuses on scientific and social questions that are important for the functioning of oceans and seas. NIOZ acts as a national marine research facilitator (NMF) for the Dutch scientific community.

THE DEPARTMENT

The National Marine Facilities department (NMF) centralizes all activities regarding sailing preparation and support of seafaring research. These activities include, among other things, management, and maintenance of the ships in the fleet, management and maintenance of the seagoing equipment and equipment present on the ship, but also the planning of sailing schedules and support for researchers in the preparation of missions on the research ships. In addition, a lot of new research equipment is also being developed in consultation with science. The fleet replacement is currently in full swing, and the pool of scientific equipment is being expanded with gliders, an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).

THE VACANCY

As an AUV/ROV Technician (Underwater Robotics and Maintenance and Operation Technician of Underwater Equipment) you play a crucial role within NIOZ. You will work in the National Marine Facilities (NMF) department and are responsible for maintaining, repairing, testing, and modifying electrical equipment required for scientific research at sea and in our laboratories. You will also be involved in the preparation and configuration of equipment for expeditions. In addition, you will participate in boat trips, where you are responsible for operating, maintaining and troubleshooting underwater equipment, including gliders, AUV and ROV. You will also maintain/create documents, manuals, and operating instructions for the equipment. You can also consider:

  • Operating and controlling the underwater vehicles during research missions.
  • Carrying out regular maintenance and repairs to the equipment.
  • Preparing and performing calibrations and tests.
  • Solving technical problems and malfunctions.
  • Documenting work performed and collecting data.

Job requirements

THE CANDIDATE

We are looking for a candidate with a completed MBO education at level 4, or higher, in Maritime Technology, Maritime Officer, Electrical Engineering, Ocean Technology (hydrography) or a similar discipline. Preferably you have experience as an electronics engineer of seagoing equipment, such as survey equipment or ROV. You can read technical drawings both mechanically and electrically. In addition, you can work (safely) and you are someone who functions well in a team. Given the international composition of NIOZ, a good command of the English language is a must. In addition, you have:

  • An independent working attitude and effective communication within a team.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Good communication, administrative and social skills and you can easily make contact with different characters.
  • A willingness to travel and work in locations around the world.
  • A flexible, enthusiastic and service-oriented attitude.
  • A confident attitude and dares to take responsibility.
  • A representative appearance and can handle stressful situations well.
  • An innovative and solution-oriented attitude to technical problems.

THE CONDITIONS

  • An appointment at NIOZ is an appointment at NWO-I, for a period of 1 year for 40 hours per week, which will be converted into an appointment for an indefinite period upon mutual satisfaction.
  • A fair classification in scale 7/8 in accordance with the collective labor agreement-WVOI, integration into the scale depends on your work experience and education level and direction.

  • 338 vacation hours per year of a full-time working week of 40 hours.
  • Pension scheme through ABP, 8% holiday pay in May and an end-of-year bonus in December of 8.33%.

  • An employment conditions arrangement whereby salary can be exchanged for days off or vice versa, or you can use salary or leave hours once every 5 years to purchase a bicycle with a tax benefit.
