Ocean Career: NOC Meiofaunal Ecologist Principal/Senior Research Scientist

We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC)—the UK's center of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We are a national research organization, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.

We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community whose focus is on improving the world in which we live. Our work is balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviors and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.

We have a rich history dating back to 1949, and our future has never looked more exciting as we aim to be the world’s most innovative oceanographic institution.

About the role

NOC is looking for a researcher in meiofaunal ecology to complement our wide-ranging portfolio from coasts to the deep-sea and develop new areas in deep-ocean benthic ecosystem research. We expect the candidate to extend NOC’s current capability in seafloor ecosystems research and to open new areas of collaboration. Our ideal candidate would be experienced in community ecology of metazoan meiobenthos (e.g., nematodes).

This is an exciting opportunity to join a diverse, dynamic, and innovative team in core areas of excellence for NOC science.

We are seeking a motivated scientist who is interested in integrating their research area into existing programs and develop new proposals for future work within the Ocean BioGeosciences Group. The successful candidate will lead work as an expert scientist, develop new ideas and projects, and form partnerships within and beyond NOC.

This role includes opportunities for seagoing science onboard NOC research vessels or other ships to carry out sampling and experiments. The role could also capitalize on laboratory facilities available at NOC for research. NOC is committed to supporting this role and it is an open-ended appointment.

At Band 4 (Principal Researcher) the successful applicant will influence the direction of global marine science by developing and leading complex, multi-center, national and international research programs. They will carry out internationally recognized excellent research that is evidenced by publication of high-quality scientific papers. They will be capable of building, managing and motivating a team of scientists to achieve excellent research results.

At Band 5 (Senior Researcher) the successful applicant will be established as a national international expert and will possess sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge to develop research programs and methodologies. They will have a growing reputation as a leader in research and a track record that is evidenced by publication of high-quality scientific papers. They will have experience of successfully managing projects and resources.

About you

You need to have a high level of technical expertise in an area of meiofaunal ecology, ideally in the deep ocean. You should have a PhD and post-doctoral experience. You are a flexible big picture thinker who can adapt your expertise to a range of high impact challenges and a dynamic funding landscape.

At Band 4, you will have experience in leading the generation of new partnerships and income for research projects at an international level. You will have an extensive record of internationally peer-reviewed publications including those of high impact to the field. Evidence of the ability to secure external funding via grant applications or diversified funding streams is essential.

At Band 5, you will have experience in generating new partnerships and income for research projects. You will have an established record of internationally peer-reviewed publications including those of high impact to the field.
