The Habitat Restoration Biologist is responsible for restoration project development, planning, implementation, and monitoring. This position is an exciting opportunity to implement impactful habitat restoration projects to improve salmonid habitat in the Hoh Watershed. The Hoh Tribe has secured three years of funding for this position. The successful applicant will work with the Natural Resources Department and partners to secure additional funding for project activities and to cover core operational costs to sustain the program in future years.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Develop a Hoh Watershed Habitat Restoration Plan in order to prioritize potential restoration actions
- Evaluate and monitor activities that pose a potential impact to fish, aquatic and riparian habitat, and water quality and quantity
- Interact with landowners and regulatory agencies to achieve the highest protection for fisheries, aquatic, and riparian resources
- Identify, prioritize, and implement cooperative habitat protection, restoration, and enhancement measures with state and private resource managers to enhance the natural resources of the Hoh Tribe's Usual and Accustomed Area
- Conduct habitat monitoring, inventories, and other activities as necessary to maintain a current information base utilizing Geographic Positioning Systems and Geographic Information System technology, aerial photos, and other mapping tools
- Communicate and coordinate issues and information the Natural Resources Director and other Hoh Natural Resource Staff
- Provide technical support to policy representatives of the Hoh Tribe
- Participate in meetings, trainings, and conferences that increase ability to achieve the above
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Specifications
- May occasionally work odd or extended hours and on weekend days as program objectives and needs dictate
- Ability to understand and communicate ecological, geological, and hydrologic concepts to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Work with fisheries technicians in data collection, restoration, monitoring, inventory, and enhancement projects
- Ability to carry/lift 40 pounds when necessary
- Ability to walk several miles a day in uneven, hilly terrain
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather in and around water for extended periods
- Ability to operate small hand tools
- Ability to sit and work at a computer workstation for several hours
- Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and build partnerships
- Ability to problem-solve and think creatively
- Ability to travel throughout the Olympic Peninsula and occasionally beyond for staff meetings, conferences, etc.
- Desire to work with Native Americans. Desire to live and work in a small isolated coastal community
- Adhere to the personnel policies and drug and alcohol polices
- Submit to and clear a pre-employment alcohol and drug test, and criminal background check
Education and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Fisheries, Wildlife Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, or a closely related field.
- Experience or education working in the field of natural resource management, fish conservation, and/or aquatic habitat restoration.
- Experience with river restoration principles, methods, and practices, including understanding engineering design/construction concepts; restoration project construction and management desired.
- Experience with project permitting related to aquatic restoration projects and in-water work (i.e., federal and state permits)
- Budget management and grant writing experience preferred
- Understanding of natural resource management issues relevant to the conservation of salmonids and their habitats in Washington State
- Valid driver’s license. Driver’s License must not contain any restrictions that would prevent an employee from operating a GSA vehicle or complying with the Tribe’s Vehicle Policy.
- Experience using MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Compensation: $26-28/hr
