Ocean Career: Project Scientist at CSA Ocean Sciences

CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is a marine science and technical services consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental, coastal, and oceanographic services in the U.S. and internationally.

We are seeking a professional scientist to support both business development for CSA’s ports and coastal sciences market, and project science. This person will be expected to support customized, competitive, and high-quality services to industry, government, and various private sector clients in a highly efficient manner while also adhering to the robust internal standards for science, operations, health and safety, quality, and professionalism. Applicants should have completed a college or Master’s degree program in the life sciences, such marine sciences (marine biology, marine ecology, biological oceanography, environmental chemistry, etc.), or a related field and have open water SCUBA certification. This position will be based out of the Stuart, FL office.

Position Summary:

The successful applicant will support and often lead business development initiatives including management and writing of technical and commercial proposals, preparation of qualifications summaries and other marketing materials, create content for digital marketing campaigns, generate high-quality leads, and manage client relationships focused on the ports and coastal sciences sector worldwide. The successful applicant will also support other aspects of CSA projects including (but not limited to) project management, field surveys (including scientific diving), data management and analysis, and scientific reporting. The successful applicant must be self-motivated and team-oriented, with strong communication and organizational skills. This position requires periodic domestic and international travel, often at short notice and on weekends, during all times of the year, conducting either daytime and nighttime shifts if at sea, and potentially for prolonged periods (several weeks).

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Support or lead the coordination, management and writing of technical and commercial proposals;
  • Prepare qualifications summaries and other marketing materials;
  • Manage proposal pipeline using CRM software;
  • Support market needs and client-focused solutions;
  • Perform strategic thinking to expand services;
  • Maintain positive client interactions and provide solutions to client needs;
  • Generate and manage business leads;
  • Support the quality, validity, and accuracy of project science;
  • Participate in nearshore and offshore sampling surveys, potentially international and sometimes with prolonged deployment, often at sea both day and night;
  • Adherence to company standards and procedures for scientific diving, data collection, quality control, and health, safety, security, and the environment (HSSE);
  • Being accountable and responsible for personal safety and safety of others;
  • Attending safety meetings and satisfactory completion of assigned training and safety meetings as applicable; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • M.Sc. in life sciences, especially marine science, biology and ecology or a related field;
  • Business development experience, including proposal management and project cost estimation.
  • Experience supporting the development of (successful) scientific funding proposals;
  • Open-water SCUBA certification with scientific diving experience or AAUS certification;
  • Familiarity with benthic marine and estuarine habitats as well as ability to learn taxonomic identification skills;
  • Experience with environmental sampling equipment;
  • Experience in working from small vessels or offshore vessels;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently but also as part of a close-knit team;
  • Excellent organization, written, and oral communication skills;
  • Strong working knowledge of computers and standard Microsoft software packages including word processing skills; and
  • Possession of a valid U.S. Driver’s license.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Marketing campaign support;
  • An understanding of federal and state of Florida permit-based biological monitoring requirements for benthic marine resources (coral, seagrass, and nearshore hardbottom
  • First Aid, CPR, and O2 administration certifications;
  • Previous health, safety, and/or environmental hazard training;
  • Understanding of data integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS); and
  • Spanish and/or French language skills.
