Ocean Career: Research Technician at Ocean Era

Ocean Era, a Hawaii-based mariculture company focused on expanding the environmentally sound production of the ocean's finest fish, is seeking a research technician to assist with a research program for developing and refining culture systems for offshore and onshore production of Gracilaria, Ulva, Sargassum, Caulerpa, Halymenia and other macroalgae.

Maintenance and expansion of current land‐based tank facilities, offshore demonstration array and macroalgae hatchery production.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two‐year or four‐year degree in marine science, biology, or similar field
  • Able to work as part of a small team of researchers
  • Able to appropriately apply scientific principles
  • SCUBA certification (Scientific Diver, or similar) and comfort diving in blue water
  • Fluency in English
  • Current legal authority to work in the US

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience culturing macroalgae
  • Basic lab and sterile techniques
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian limu
  • Small boat handling ability
  • Data processing experience
  • Report‐writing and grant‐writing experience

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoors in a hot, humid environment with at least 50% exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Offshore in small boats.
