Ocean Career: Science Communications Officer at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Science Communications Officer for a full-time career opportunity.

The successful candidate will oversee and strengthen the production and dissemination of IODP and scientific ocean drilling digital communications on behalf of the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP), associated with the International Ocean Drilling Program, in particular across (but not limited to) social media platforms. The role will also provide support to communications and presence at conferences and national meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Management of social media presence for the U.S. Science Support Program through the multiple platforms currently used (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), including regular analysis of performance across all social media platforms, and reporting of those analytics and metrics to the USSSP Assistant Director, Education and Outreach.
  • Coordination of the bi-weekly digital community updates, twice monthly digital newsletters, and other digital communications to the IODP community as required, including maintenance of mailing lists.
  • Assist the USSSP Assistant Director of Education and Outreach in developing and managing a strong web presence that maximizes dissemination of key strategic messages on two USSSP websites, one scientific and one outreach-oriented.
  • Assist USSSP in promoting external outreach activities that may be of interest or relevance to the IODP community.
  • Reports to the Assistant Director of Education and Outreach in the U.S. Science Support Program.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related experience required.
  • Experience with social media essential (e.g., social networking, social curation on leading social media platforms), including utilizing the metrics and analytics capabilities of each platform.
  • Familiarity and experience with Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office required.
  • Must be able to work independently and be a self-starter.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Graphic design skills highly desirable.
  • At least one year of related outreach experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with IODP is desirable but not essential.
