Ocean Career: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Research Technician

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Research Technician will function as liaison between scientific party and ship’s crew while on research expeditions. Oversee deck operations, equipment stowage, and handling of scientific samples. Maintain inventory of shipboard equipment and supplies for science operations. Manage and/or assist with shipment of science equipment to and from ship in port. Oversee loading and unloading of science equipment on research ships. Assemble, operate and maintain oceanographic sampling equipment for collection of geological, physical, chemical and biological data. Operate and maintain underway data instruments including digital echosounders, towed magnetometers and uncontaminated seawater systems. Operate and maintain CTD and XBT systems. Must be able to undertake these responsibilities with only general supervision while at sea.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in natural or physical science, or engineering, and one (1) year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven ability to effectively interface with various computer operating systems (i.e., Windows, macOS, Linux)
  • Proficient in oceanographic data collection and processing techniques.
  • Understanding of basic electronics troubleshooting techniques.
  • Must be able to delegate authority and responsibility as required to complete tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with machine tools.
  • Ability to operate large mechanical devices, e.g., cranes, forklifts and winches.
  • For all physical tasks must be in good physical condition and be prepared to perform heavy physical labor as required.
  • Good interpersonal skills. Must be able to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people, both in terms of academic background and age.
  • Ability to work around ships and ensure that high safety standards are maintained by the scientific party.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing and able to spend up to 6 months of the year at sea in 1-2 month increments.
  • Must be capable of lifting and moving moderate weights in port and at sea. Must be physically fit to perform duties without causing risk to self or others.
  • Must be able to travel globally without restrictions.
  • Must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Annual Full Pay Range:

$58,778 - $94,604 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

NOTE: Salary placement is determined by the top candidate’s overall qualifications/relevant experience, market data and internal equity.
