Ocean Career: Sea Forest Oyster Hatchery Technician

The Hatchery Technician works in a small hands-on team that supports the operations of the Sea Forest Oyster Hatchery and works together to produce high-quality seed stock for our customers. This is a fantastic opportunity for a graduate looking to gain some experience within an innovative biotech/aquaculture company.

The position would also suit a candidate with hatchery experience and a well-developed understanding of Molluscan culture in the hatchery environment.

The role reports to the Hatchery Manager and is responsible for:

  • Participating in all technical and operational aspects of oyster production.
  • Conduct tasks in support of Broodstock management.
  • Assist with the management and production of microalgae cultures
  • Contribute to larval rearing.
  • Executing activities related to spat cultivation.
  • Participating in the process of making oyster sales.

This position is based at our Triabunna site and operates on a full-time 7-day-per-week rotational roster.

The Person

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teammates and external stakeholders.
  • Is self-motivated to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Practical experience in shellfish husbandry or related field (desirable).
  • A basic understanding of Shellfish biology and water chemistry is desirable but not essential.
  • Has a strong work ethic and is physically fit, as it is a hands-on position.

Licenses

  • Current driver’s license
  • Qualification in Aquaculture or related field (desirable)
