Ocean Career: UK Hydrographic Office Hydrographic Survey Delivery Manager

We are looking for a Survey Delivery Manager to join the Bathymetric Team at the UK Hydrographic Office.

The Bathymetric Team sits within the wider Scientific Analysis Group. The team is made up of specialists with different levels of experience, including team members who have “grown” as specialists whilst at the UKHO.

The team has 4 key areas of responsibility:

  • Verification of all bathymetric data (including multibeam and Lidar) received by the UKHO for use in a wide range of UKHO products and services.
  • Planning and delivery or oversight of bathymetric surveys as part of overseas marine capability building programs.
  • Providing Subject Matter Expertise (SME) support, training and consultancy to internal and external organizations.
  • Development of new initiatives within bathymetry data collection and processing.

The specific focus of the Survey Delivery Manager role is to manage the Scientific Analysis Group’s involvement in Hydrographic Programs, and emerging hydrographic professional services delivered by the UKHO.

You will also be required to:

  • Act as Charge Surveyor and Field Manager for UKHO surveys.
  • Act as Client Representative for contract surveys.
  • Provide hydrographic support to the wider Bathy team, coaching on best practice and offering technical advice and guidance.

As part of the team’s role in building the UKHO’s hydrographic capability, we are keen to support the continuing professional development of our specialists in this discipline. This will vary depending on individual and team need but could include training and opportunities to support advancement through the Hydrographic Professional Accreditation Scheme (HPAS) as well as through the UKHO Career Level Framework, which can lead to towards affiliation with IMarEST.

Depending on the individuals needs and the needs of the team, we prefer to work in a hybrid way. Its advantageous for new team members to be in the office for face-to-face training and to meet the wider team. However, we are flexible in our approach with no fixed policy.

This role requires the ability to travel/deploy in support of our survey program, both in the UK and Abroad. Overtime may be available for deployments alongside shipboard allowance.

Job Description

As our Survey Delivery Manager, you will:

  • Manage the Scientific Analysis Group involvement in Hydrographic Programs by:
  • Collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure requirements are managed professionally.
  • Coordinate the planning and resourcing requirements to deliver tasks on time/on budget.
  • Providing professional advice supporting multi-year frameworks for hydrographic data collection provision.
  • Preparing Hydrographic Instructions (HI) for hydrographic programs and other inter-governmental projects, including providing advice to
  • Program Managers on delivery options, risks, and constraints.
  • Acting as Client Representative during contract surveys to ensure compliance.
  • Acting as Charge Surveyor for UKHO conducted surveys. This may involve extended periods in overseas regions, providing hydrographic survey expertise and/or training.
  • Provide professional policy, advice, and training:
  • Represent the UKHO either as member or chair as required at IHO and other international hydrographic committees and working groups.
  • In collaboration with other technical SMEs in SAG, support the development of UKHO policy on hydrographic surveying and data handling.
  • As required, advise wider UKHO areas and external organizations on matters related to bathymetry, hydrographic surveying, and practical hydrographic project management.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the survey industry in support of survey programs and wider UKHO and Government requirements.

Required Skills and Experience

We are looking for candidates who are accredited to HPAS Level 1 or Ø and/or will have successfully completed a Cat A or Cat B hydrographic education. Candidates without this may be considered if they have equivalent education and hydrographic surveying experience.

You should also have an ENG 1 or ML5 seafarer medical fitness certificate. If your certificate has lapsed we would require you to pass this before making you an unconditional offer.

You will be able to demonstrate your depth and currency of hydrographic survey experience and will have passion for using seabed mapping to improve outcomes for people and the environment. An appreciation of the wider utility of updated bathymetry, particularly in the context of developing nations will also be key.

You will be able to work with a high degree of initiative and autonomy and have the drive to deliver the very best outcomes for the business and our customers, achieving results through effective collaboration and communication.

Salary:

  • £52,645
    • An RRA of £7,000 per annum is included in this figure. This RRA is based on you having a CAT A Certification or HPAS equivalent. If you have a CAT B certification or HPAS equivalent the RRA will be £3,500 per annum.
