The Fisheries and Marine Institute (Marine Institute) – a campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland – is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine learning and applied research. The Marine Institute enjoys an outstanding reputation in Canada, across North America, and internationally, as the most comprehensive institution for education, training, research, and industrial support for the ocean industries.

Home to over 400 researchers, faculty members, and staff, over 1200 students in Certificate Diploma, Bachelor, Masters and PhD programs, and over 6000 learners enrolled annually in community based and industrial response training courses, the Marine Institute offers more than 20 programs through its three Schools: The School of Fisheries; the School of Maritime Studies; and the School of Ocean Technology. The Schools include specialized centres that drive innovation and collaboration with community partners, lead technology transfer, and provide training to industry clients. As part of its global reach, the Marine Institute has successfully implemented more than 250 projects in 50 countries, to date.

With oceans intrinsic to the culture and economic heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Marine Institute is integrally linked to the province’s marine and maritime identity. It is critical that it continue to play a leadership role in applied oceans education, research, and training. It is within this context that Memorial University and the Marine Institute seek a visionary and dynamic Vice-President to lead its operations and further strengthen its reputation as a centre of excellence across the oceans sector. Reporting directly to the President of Memorial University and working in collaboration with the Marine Institute’s Executive Committee and Industry Advisory Committee, other Vice-Presidents and the University’s senior leadership team, the Vice-President (Marine Institute) will effectively manage the Institute’s resources and fundraising capabilities, promote pedagogical excellence, advance its research enterprise and international exposure, and nurture mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The Vice-President (Marine Institute) will bring demonstrated academic leadership in a post-secondary environment; an outstanding record that demonstrates their commitment to Indigenization, equity, diversity, and inclusion; a collegial and collaborative style; an appreciation for the range of scholarship found within the Marine Institute and its multidimensional nature; and the ability to lead and empower a diverse group of faculty, researchers, staff, and students. The successful candidate will have the ability to balance consultation with sound decision-making and will possess superior financial, organizational, and analytical skills. An excellent communicator and motivator, the ideal candidate will hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The appointment, which is renewable, is for five years and is to take effect at the earliest mutually agreeable opportunity.
