Ocean Career: WiseOceans Marine Biologist and Educator

About the role

Are you an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and guest-focused person? Then come and join our team as a WiseOceans Marine Biologist/Educator based at a prestigious luxury resort in French Polynesia!

Tasks and duties

Guest engagement and education

  • Conduct guided snorkels and other marine activities—the guests can enjoy being joined in the water by a Marine Educator who will identify marine life for the guests and provide extra information to enhance their in-water experience
  • Help guests to identify fish and other marine life they have seen when out snorkeling, and be on hand to discuss local marine life with them
  • Deliver (and generate guest-interest in) regular marine life talks to resort guests on a range of topics, including sharks, cetaceans, coral and coral reefs and turtles
  • Deliver fun and educational sessions on marine topics with the resort Kids Club
  • Write regular blog posts, and occasional articles and press releases
  • When the resort requests, attend/host evening events with the guests, to discuss marine life and promote the conservation and education activities of WiseOceans and the resort

Team Leader responsibilities

  • Task delegation
  • Event and activity organization and coordination
  • Timesheet management
  • Chairing team meetings of the team members based at the resort
  • Merchandise stock management
  • Uniform stock management
  • Representing the Resort Operations Manager in liaison with resort management as required and directed by the Resort Operations Manager
  • Representing WiseOceans in liaison with other organizations in French Polynesia

Resort team member and local community engagement and education

  • Engage resort staff in marine education and conservation via a variety of means, bringing new ideas to the table to increase internal awareness of marine life
  • Develop and deliver community outreach events and activities

Science and Research

  • Scientific research activities including, but not limited to, coral reef monitoring dives, coral predator monitoring and control, and incidental megafauna sightings records
  • Working on our on-site reef restoration project, including:
  • Coral nursery maintenance
  • Coral propagation
  • Guest engagement on reef restoration
  • Project development

Other

  • Development of the Marine Discovery Program
  • General administration including, but not limited to, completing spreadsheets for reporting purposes, data entry and bill payment processing
  • Collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, content for display on noticeboards, marine life guides, signs and other interpretation, content for Resort guides and schedules, and other literature for guests
  • Communications including, but not limited to, emails to resort management and all staff, attending and participating in resort staff meetings and sending reports to resort and WiseOceans management

Requirements

Applications can only be accepted if you are:

  • French/French Polynesian nationality
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and French
  • PADI Instructor or above/equivalent and First aid trained

Essential

  • French/French Polynesian nationality
  • Fluent in written and spoke English and French
  • PADI Instructor or above/equivalent and First aid trained
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject
  • Experience with coral propagation/reef restoration (BioRock beneficial)
  • Experience of working in a luxury resort
  • Excellent snorkeling skills including the ability to free dive to 5 m comfortably
  • Good knowledge of tropical marine life and understanding of marine conservation globally
  • A minimum of one years’ experience in marine life monitoring (with a preference for marine megafauna and tropical marine species)
  • A minimum one years’ experience conducting underwater surveys (particular interest in coral reef monitoring and habitat mapping
  • Experience in an educating role
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Confident public speaker with experience giving presentations to a range of audiences
  • Self-motivated and outgoing
  • Excellent communication skills
