Ocean Internship: Project Oceanology Marine Science Internship

Project Oceanology seeks a seasonal Marine Science Education Intern a positive, energetic, and enthusiastic college student that enjoys science, the outdoors, and working with youth in an educational summer camp setting.

Interns should have knowledge of group behavior, societal trends and influences, and developmental needs of the adolescent population. The Marine Science Intern will supervise summer campers, develop, and teach marine science lessons under the instruction of Project Oceanology educators, and generally provide a safe, supportive and friendly learning environment.

Applicants should have knowledge of marine science and broad interest in oceans, including coastal ecosystems, fisheries resources, human interactions, and management issues. The job assignment will involve accompanying and assisting camp staff with the delivery of marine science programs aboard research vessels, on shoreline programs, in marine laboratories, and in classrooms. Considerable physical stamina is required to work aboard vessels and outdoors for long periods, including during inclement weather. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation skills, confidentiality, and communication skills.

This position is based at Project Oceanology in Groton, CT; when residential camps are in session, interns must reside in the hostel on the premises and generally remain on-site from 9pm-9am. Successful completion of staff training activities is required; the work schedule is flexible and varied from Sundays through Fridays. The daily rate of pay is $80; room is provided, and board is provided when camp is in session.
