Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) is dedicated to conducting and facilitating research, education, and outreach that will sustain marine diversity for future generations.

SUMMARY:

• To assist with research programmes conducted under the direction of the Research Director
• Assist in all logistical planning, preparation, execution, and clean-up efforts of research programme activities under the guidance of the Research Technicians and Research Manager
• To be a resource to any and all visiting research scientists
• Assist with education, operations, and advancement/communications programmes as required

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Your internship will entail working with a vibrant and dynamic group of educators and scientists. Your responsibilities include the following:

• Assist in the delivery of research programme activities, including field and laboratory activities, with specific focus on acclimatization experiments.
• Assist as needed with all research related scuba dives and coral restoration activities, including maintenance and cleaning of the nursery.
• Assist technical research dives by serving as a deck hand when needed.
• Facilitate research dives by preparing field equipment and supplies, printing data sheets, loading and offloading the boats, cleaning and properly storing equipment post dives.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including upkeep of a tidy and organized lab environment.
• Enter data and organize spreadsheets
• Attend weekly meetings with research team and station staff
• Analyse data when necessary
• Submit a research report at the end of the internship
• Give at least one public presentation on focus research area
• Conduct tours of the station
• Contribute to the successful operation of a busy, remote field research and education station
• Contribute to outreach when needed and provide relevant imagery to the advancement team for publications and social media

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be Caymanian or have qualifying residential status
• High school diploma required, current enrolment in or recent graduation from a university programme in a related field of study is a plus
• CCMI interns should be versatile and willing and interested in assisting with a variety of tasks
• Scuba diving skills, preferably rescue diver level with 60+ dives
• Good communication and analytical skills
• Experience in coral and fish identification, environmental awareness, interest in conservation all a plus

REMUNERATION:

Room and board at the Little Cayman Research Centre; stipend of US $500/month
