Ocean Career: Sound Salmon Solutions Habitat Project Coordinator & Co-Field Lead

The Habitat Project Coordinator is responsible for directing the work of SSS Habitat Restoration Crew Lead, Technicians and contract restoration crews hired to complete habitat restoration work within the that are consistent with Sound Salmon Solutions Mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delegate day to day operations of the Restoration Field Crew as directed by the Habitat Program Manager
  • Meet with the Restoration Crew Lead weekly or as needed, to discuss project scheduling and deliverable expectations for the Restoration Field Crew to ensure project work completion is on schedule and within budget.
  • Participate (2 to 3 days/week as schedule allows) in the implementation of riparian habitat restoration activities according to specifications and plans such as chemical and mechanical management of invasive plant species, installation of native trees and shrubs, erosion control management, on site assessments including culvert surveys and habitat surveys, vegetation monitoring, constructing and repairing fences along waterways.
  • Conduct QA/QC inspections to confirm that work performed by staff and crews is consistent with SSS standards
  • Follow SSS purchasing guidelines to obtain equipment and materials required to complete restoration work. Work with crews to mobilize materials to worksites
  • Oversee the application of herbicides ensuring all laws and rules are followed by SSS staff and crews. Ensures crews herbicide licenses are renewed, and if necessary that testing is scheduled to obtain a pesticide license(s).
  • Maintains herbicide application records necessary for WSDA reporting.
  • Oversee that daily log records of field activities are kept, maintained and shared with Restoration Program Manager on a regular
  • Oversee that all vehicles, equipment and materials are checked, maintained and scheduled for routine maintenance and repair.
  • Assist Habitat Restoration Manager with making sure landowners and partners are properly contacted within proper amount of time as per Landowner Agreements and contracts before mobilizing Restoration Field Crew.
  • Oversee implementation of SSS’s Accident Prevention Program and SSS Safety protocol and lead monthly Safety Meetings at monthly all staff meetings.
  • Check in with Habitat Restoration Crew regarding timesheets to ensure their understanding of correct billing codes for timesheets for the Habitat Program Manager to review and sign to be sent to the Financial Team.
  • Under direction of the Habitat Program Manager, represent SSS with landowners, partners and volunteers on behalf of the Habitat Program Manager when they are unable to meet.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, environmental sciences, natural resources, or similar field Four years of relevant work experience may substitute for A Bachelor’s degree in the fields listed.
  • At least 2 years of relevant working experience.
  • Experience overseeing and providing leadership to Restoration Field Crews preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with project partners and contractors
  • Proficient with native plant identification and revegetation restoration
  • Experience with implementing habitat restoration projects and understanding of salmon habitat
  • Skilled in the safe operation of hand and power tools such as weed eaters, chainsaws, power auger, small tractors, high-weed mower and Kubota UTV. Able to maintain/complete minor field repairs.
  • Comfortable working around heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors.
  • Comfortable working around water and in the safe operation of small boats
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive truck and trailer
  • Experience applying herbicides according to Washington State laws. Ability to oversee the application of herbicides according to Washington State laws
  • Able to perform physically demanding manual labor outdoors, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain in all types of weather
  • Experience using field survey equipment such as Field Maps, auto levels, compass, clinometers, GPS, etc.
  • Proficient with computers including the use of Microsoft Office (Word/Excel)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written

Pay:

Project Coordinator rate: $23 per hour (10-20 hours a week as needed) Restoration Co-Lead Rate: $19 per hour (20-30 hours per week) plus employer-provided health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, PTO, paid holidays, a 403(b)-retirement plan. (If you elect to decline medical benefits your rate of pay will increase by $1 per hour)
